Penguin Rehab & Release Having Bad Luck – A Request for Support

Burnie, Nuremberg, 06. January 2025

Almost a year ago, we reported for the first time about "Penguin Rehab & Release", a sanctuary for penguins (and other seabirds) in Burnie, Tasmania: (Pygmy) Penguins Need Your Help!

This season is again characterized by a very large number of sick, injured or exhausted little penguins, which are treated and cared for at "Penguin Rehab & Release" in order to be able to successfully release them back into the wild. For the first time since the founding of "Penguin Rehab & Release", no more animals could be taken in at the end of December 2024 – due to capacity reasons. Anyone who knows Kathy Grieveson, the founder of the institution, knows how difficult this decision must have been for her.

gofundmeIIn the past year, there was also the bad luck that severe storms in northwestern Tasmania damaged the outdoor enclosure of the station. The roof of the enclosure had to be completely replaced and the sand substrate had to be dug up and replaced with fresh sand. In order to be able to maintain the care, an "indoor enclosure" was even temporarily set up and one room was "transformed" into a penguin colony (see video below).

A "Go Fund Me" campaign was launched to cover the costs of this, as well as for the ongoing operation. Every donation, big or small, is very welcome. By clicking on the campaign picture, you will be taken to the donation page. Thank you very much!

In addition to the care and rehabilitation of little penguins in particular, "Penguin Rehab & Release" is active and committed in many other ways. The organization conducts intensive press and educational work on the causes of endangerment for the animals. "Penguin Rehab & Release" also supports and organizes censuses of the penguin population on site and is also involved, for example, in the construction of protective facilities (fences) for the breeding grounds of the penguins.

A good overview of the activities can be found on the Facebook page of "Penguin Rehab & Release", which can also be shared.

P.S. On the Facebook page you will also find the possibility to adopt a foster penguin. The certificate issued for this purpose is a nice gift for all kinds of occasions!
