For interested schools

Alex and Alexa – The Concept

2009 represented the 150th anniversary of the death of Alexander von  Humboldt. This was a good reason for Sphenisco to start our project "Alex and Alexa Go Traveling". Alex and Alexa are two stuffed penguins who, working as diplomatic representatives of their endangered species visit schools in and outside of Germany, bringing attention to the threat of extinction to the Humboldt Penguin.  The project was primarily conceived for grammar school children, from third to fourth grade, but also for fifth graders.

Alexa is primarily underway in Germany, whereas Alex travels outside the country, especially in South America. Alex and Alexa meet the children at the schools as part of a packet, with two suitcases, the contents of which are designed to stimulate the students' interest in threatened sea birds.

Further details about the project can be found in the following detailed information.

Are you interested in having Alex or Alexa visit your school? Then we would be happy to receive an e-mail from you! Please write to

We have one final request. In order to continually actualize our website, we would be happy to receive photos and reports from each of the classes where Alex and Alexa were guests. Please let us know if any of the parents have any objections to their children's photos being published on our website.

Why are Alex and Alexa Traveling? Ideas and Concepts

Alex and Alexa are diplomats of the threatened Humboldt Penguin. They wish to

introduce the children to their kind
describe the threats to their species
increase the interest in protection of the Humboldt Penguin
show the children ideas and possibilities for them to use for protecting the Humboldt Penguin.

Alex and Alexa travel from classroom to classroom. They wish to promote communication between the classes (in particular between those in different countries).

The children can use Alex and Alexa's visit to

inform themselves in a multifaceted way about a threatened species and occupy themselves with the importance of nature and natural protection.
share information with each other about their daily lives and experiences at school.
read about how other school classes have occupied themselves with these issues.
become active themselves in the protection of Humboldt Penguins.

What are We Getting Involved In?

Alex and Alexa are happy to be able to visit different countries and to teach others about themselves and others of the same species.

Alex and Alexa wish in particular that

the sending class write a letter
the sending class send a class photo
contact is made with the tourist guide (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. )
it is noted in Alex or Alexa's diary what he/she experienced in your school class:
what exercises were completed; based on the materials that they brought with them in their suitcases, how the students discussed the threats and protection of the Humboldt Penguin; what activity(ies) the students did on their own for the protection of the species; that the class sent Alex/Alexa on his/her way, with a small exercise for the next class.

Needed are the following:

an internet connection.
a DVD player for the film.
time to read and write.
postal costs for a letter to the class that sent you Alex or Alexa.
postal costs to be able to send Alex or Alexa to the next class, and perhaps some knowledge of a foreign language.
time and ideas, to make small gifts for the next class.
intense contact and exchange of ideas between the sending and receiving classes.
to thoroughly inform oneself about the Humboldt Penguin, the threats to its existence, and its protection.
To develop ideas and activities for the protection of the Humboldt Penguin, and to act on them.
